About the Summer Festival: Films For Freedom
The film Hurdle offers a powerful look at life under military occupation through the eyes of Palestinian
youth. The film showcases how young Palestinians confront a world of walls, checkpoints,
and arrests in ways that are both unexpected and inspiring. Hurdle's protagonists,
Sami and Mohammad, begin teaching the creative practices of parkour and photography
to young people in their communities as a means to overcome personal and political
obstacles. Though these young men are separated by a wall, they are united in leading
the next generation toward freedom and self-determination through creative practices.
Hurdle invites us to reflect on how the next generation will address the legacies of wars
and walls they inherit and find ways to practice their freedom.
We hope you will come hear from Michael Rowley, an award-winning documentary filmmaker
from Dallas, Texas, renowned for his impactful storytelling. His films delve into
themes of justice, human connection, and the struggles faced by individuals in challenging
circumstances.
Mai Shahin, who will moderate the Q&A session, brings over 12 years of expertise in conflict resolution, specializing in nonviolent communication, resistance, and war trauma therapy. Based near the separation wall in East Jerusalem, Mai navigates the many challenges of life under occupation with resilience.
Invite a friend to watch the film with us this week. We hope to see you on Wednesday.
