Through the Lens: Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements
Irene Taylor Brodsky builds on her powerful first feature, Hear and Now (Audience Award winner at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival), by delving into an intergenerational exploration of living with deafness. Brodsky’s son Jonas began losing his hearing as a baby and underwent cochlear-implant surgery as a toddler. Now 11 years old, Jonas has adjusted to a world with sound and is learning to play Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.

Salt Lake City Unanimously Passes Back From the Brink Resolution
On April 2, 2019, the Salt Lake City Council members made history when they voted unanimously in support of a resolution calling to prevent nuclear war. The resolution was the culmination of cooperation among the Utah Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (UCAN), Mayor Jackie Biskupski and her staff, city council members. The event coincided with a visit from Susi Snyder, a leader in the global coalition International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which works to promote adherence to and full implementation of the United Nations treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons.

He is transferred to the Broward Transitional Center, a detention facility used as a holding space for imminent deportations. Once inside, Marco discovers a complex for-profit institution housing hundreds of multinational immigrants, all imprisoned without trial.

The Intersection of Migration and Human Trafficking
Migrants have taken a prominent place on the public stage in recent years, from divided political rhetoric on status of migrants in the United States, to news of migrant caravans traveling to the U.S. from South America, to the changing landscape of immigration law in the country, such as the upheaval of asylum availability or family separation at the border. These individuals are at significant risk for trafficking. Many are lured into migration by promise of employment, safety, or legitimate status in the country of immigration. Others are victims of crime such as kidnapping or sex crimes. The result is often enslavement, violence, torture and even threats of death.

Barbara Tanner Receives Honorary Degree
The University of Utah Board of Trustees awarded Barbara Tanner an honorary doctorate degree at the 2018 commencement ceremony this past Spring. The award is the highest honor given by the university.

On Wednesday, President Trump said in an executive order that he planned to keep families together by jailing parents and children together during the course of their immigration hearings.

What starts out as a struggle for racial and labor justice, soon becomes a fight for gender equality within the same union she is eventually forced to leave.
